Woman Alleges Kidney Removed During Sterilisation in Bikaner

A 33-year-old woman from Bikaner, Radha Devi, has accused Jeevan Raksha Hospital of removing one of her kidneys without consent during a sterilisation procedure in July 2024. The incident came to light after she experienced abdominal pain in April 2025 and underwent a sonography, which revealed her right kidney was missing.

Allegations and Complaint

Radha Devi stated that she underwent a tubectomy on July 11, 2024, at the private hospital. On April 16, 2025, she consulted a doctor for abdominal pain and had a sonography the next day. The scan showed that her right kidney was absent. A repeat sonography confirmed the same finding. Her sonography report stated: 'Right Kidney is not seen. Left kidney is normal in size.'

Devi alleged, 'The doctor told me that my right kidney is absent, as shown in the sonography report. Jeevan Raksha Hospital removed one of my kidneys.' Her husband, Fakeeraram, filed a written complaint with Bikaner Superintendent of Police Mridul Kachhawa, accusing the hospital's management and staff of misleading the couple into agreeing to the sterilisation and removing the kidney without consent. The family has demanded a detailed investigation and action against those responsible.

Police Action and Hospital Response

SP Kachhawa ordered an inquiry into the matter. Police will examine hospital records, operation documents, and medical reports as part of the investigation.

Jeevan Raksha Hospital denied the accusation, calling it medically baseless. CEO Pawan Choudhary stated that the sterilisation surgery lasted only 5 to 10 minutes, and Devi was discharged about two hours later the same day. The hospital maintained that if a kidney were removed, such rapid recovery and discharge would not have been possible.

'It is medically impossible to remove a kidney through the small incision used in a tubectomy. The claim is medically baseless and intended to damage the institution’s reputation,' Choudhary said. He added that some people are born with only one kidney, a condition often discovered accidentally during medical examinations.

Investigation Underway

Police are now investigating the allegations, reviewing hospital records and medical documents to determine the facts. The case has raised concerns about medical ethics and patient consent in the region.
