Residents of western Bihar are set to receive a massive boost in healthcare accessibility with the construction of a state-of-the-art medical college and hospital in Dumraon, Buxar. This ambitious project aims to end the long-standing necessity for patients to undertake arduous journeys to cities like Patna or Varanasi for advanced medical treatment.
A Major Infrastructure Leap for Healthcare
The Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL) is swiftly implementing this crucial project. The foundation is being laid on a sprawling 25.38-acre plot at Haryana Farm in Dumraon, with an estimated investment of Rs 515 crore. Officials have confirmed that the 500-bed hospital-cum-medical college is scheduled for completion by March 2026.
Once operational, the institution will not only provide tertiary care but also nurture future medical professionals, admitting 100 MBBS students annually. This dual function is expected to significantly strengthen the medical ecosystem in the region.
Strategic Location and Enhanced Connectivity
Recognizing the importance of easy access, planners have chosen a strategic site approximately 5-6 km from the Dumraon railway station. Its location on the town's outskirts is designed to help patients and ambulances avoid inner-city traffic congestion.
To further improve connectivity, the state government has greenlit Rs 12 crore for constructing a 13.5-km approach road. This new road will link from Dhakaich on NH-922, pass by the sub-divisional hospital, and stretch up to the Koran Sarai bridge. Preliminary work on this vital artery has already commenced.
"Good road connectivity is crucial for any major healthcare facility. The approved road project will ensure smooth movement of patients and emergency vehicles," emphasized a senior district official.
A Game-Changer for the Shahabad Region
The hospital is poised to be a transformative institution for the Shahabad region. It will be equipped with a full-fledged OPD, a modern emergency department, intensive care units, and advanced diagnostic facilities. Health authorities believe this comprehensive setup will substantially reduce the number of patient referrals to hospitals in Patna and Varanasi.
"It will reduce the burden on major hospitals in Patna and ensure quality treatment closer to home," stated an official associated with the project.
The benefits will extend beyond immediate healthcare. The medical college is anticipated to spur social and economic development by generating employment opportunities and attracting allied businesses and services to the area.
Direct beneficiaries will include residents of Buxar, Ara, Rohtas, and neighboring districts, as confirmed by Omprakash Bhuvan, president of the district BJP. Local sentiment echoes this optimism, with a resident expressing, "This institution will bring hope and relief to thousands of families. For the first time, Shahabad will have a hospital of this scale and quality."
Pradeep Kumar Jaiswal, president of the Dumraon Chamber of Commerce and Industries, envisions the Dumraon Medical College and Hospital emerging as a major healthcare hub for the entire Shahabad region, marking a new era of self-reliance in advanced medical care for western Bihar.
