Jharkhand Appoints AIIMS Forensics Head as Vice Chancellor for State's First Medical University
In a significant development for medical education in Jharkhand, the state health department has appointed Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta, head of the Department of Forensics Medicine and Toxicology at AIIMS New Delhi, as the vice chancellor for its proposed medical university. This marks a crucial step toward establishing the first medical university in the state, which was announced in the budget speech for the 2026-27 fiscal year last month.
University Location and Initial Setup
The medical university is proposed to come up in Brambe, on the outskirts of Ranchi, the state capital. Officials have identified the Panchayati Raj Training Institute (PRTI) campus in Brambe as the initial location for the university. Ajoy Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary of the health department, stated, "We have sought immediate transfer of this campus for early commencement of the medical university." The PRTI campus spans over 60 acres, providing ample space for the institution's development.
Unification of Medical Colleges and Courses Offered
Once operational, the medical university will bring all existing government-run medical colleges in Jharkhand under its umbrella. Currently, these colleges are either autonomous or affiliated with various universities, leading to coordination challenges. A department official explained, "This will bring uniformity in teaching, examinations, affiliation, and recognition-related functions. Until now, these institutions had to face coordination problems as they are affiliated to different universities."
The university will offer a wide range of courses, including:
- General Medicine
- Dental Studies
- Nursing Programs
- Paramedical Studies
This comprehensive approach aims to streamline medical education across the state.
Leadership and Future Impact
Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta will helm the university for three years or until he turns 70, whichever comes earlier, as per the department's notification. His appointment is expected to leverage his expertise from AIIMS to enhance the university's standards.
Ajoy Kumar Singh highlighted the long-term benefits, noting that the university will simplify the process of increasing undergraduate and postgraduate seats. "Once the varsity is ready, the process of increasing undergraduate and postgraduate seats will also become simpler and more effective. Research activities in the medical field will also receive a boost," he said.
Government's Vision and Historical Context
The establishment of this medical university is part of the state government's ambitious project to boost health education and medical services in Jharkhand. State health minister Irfan Ansari had previously sought the Centre's assistance for the project and emphasized its importance. "For the first time after the state's formation in 2000, the government is now aggressively working towards setting up a medical university which will be a boon for the state," Ansari said in an earlier statement.
This initiative aims to address gaps in medical education and healthcare delivery, positioning Jharkhand as a hub for medical excellence in the region.
