Doctors Hail Revocation of Suspension of Former HOD

Kharagpur: The medical community has welcomed the state health department's decision to revoke the suspension of Professor Md Alauddin, the former head of gynaecology and obstetrics at Midnapore Medical College. This move has sparked fresh hope among other senior doctors who were suspended alongside him, as they now anticipate similar relief.

Background of Suspensions

The disciplinary action dates back to January 8, 2025, when 12 doctors, including seven postgraduate trainees (PGTs), the department head, and the medical superintendent-cum-vice principal (MSVP), were suspended by the state government. The crackdown followed the tragic deaths of two women after C-sections, while four others fell critically ill the same night.

Investigations Point to Spurious IV Fluid

Although subsequent investigations pointed towards spurious Ringer's lactate, a commonly administered IV fluid, as the actual cause of the crisis, the long-term suspensions remained for the faculty members. While the PGTs had their suspensions cleared shortly after, senior residents and faculty had been sidelined for over a year.

Appeals for Reinstatement

Among those seeking reinstatement is former MSVP Jayanta Kumar Routh. Hospital sources said Routh filed an online appeal at Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's Janata Darbar public grievance forum two weeks ago. Routh's appeal emphasizes that he was officially on leave on the night of the incident. He has submitted comprehensive documentation, including certified leave records and his exact resumption date, to establish his absence.

Precedent Set by Alauddin's Return

With Professor Alauddin's return to service setting a precedent, colleagues and medical associations are actively urging the administration to expedite the review of the remaining suspended doctors. The medical community remains hopeful for a swift resolution.
