Goa Launches Affordable Health Tests with Mashelkar Foundation

Goa Pioneers Affordable Diagnostic Tests Through Public-Private Partnership

In a landmark move for healthcare accessibility, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in Goa has joined forces with the Anjani Mashelkar Foundation (AMF) to roll out affordable diagnostic tests across the state. This initiative positions Goa as the first state in India to implement such a collaborative effort, targeting cost-effective health solutions for its residents.

Announcement by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant unveiled this project on Thursday during an event where noted scientist and innovator Raghunath Mashelkar was honored with the Gomant Gaurav Sanman. Sawant emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating that it aims to revolutionize primary healthcare diagnostics.

"In a few days, the DHS will provide one test which within 10 minutes will test different parameters for just Rs 100. This will start from Goa. The DHS and Anjani Mashelkar Foundation have been in discussions on this for five to six months and in a few days, we will start this project," said Sawant. He highlighted that this initiative is part of broader efforts to transform Goa into a hub of knowledge and innovation, promoting research-driven industries, startups, and entrepreneurship.

Vision and Impact of the Anjani Mashelkar Foundation

Raghunath Mashelkar, a former director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, founded the Anjani Mashelkar Foundation in 2011, inspired by his mother's last wish to improve the lives of the disadvantaged. At the event, Mashelkar underscored the critical role of early diagnosis in public health.

"Early diagnosis is very important. Our public health centres need strengthening across the country. Through the AffEx Health Platform, primary health centres will be able to test 20 parameters, measured in 10 minutes for just Rs 100," said Mashelkar. He dedicated the Gomant Gaurav Sanman honor to his mother, who encouraged him to pursue science for the benefit of the poor.

Event Details and Broader Initiatives

The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the World Peace University, organized the ceremony to confer the Gomant Gaurav Sanman upon Mashelkar. This recognition aligns with Goa's strategic vision for development, as outlined in the Goa Golden Jubilee Development Council's Goa Vision 2035 report, which Mashelkar chaired. The report provides a holistic roadmap balancing economic progress with environmental responsibility and cultural preservation.

Additionally, Sawant announced that the World Peace University will commence courses from the upcoming academic year, further bolstering Goa's educational and innovative landscape. This move complements the state's goal of fostering a knowledge-based economy.

Key Features of the Diagnostic Initiative

  • Affordability: Tests priced at just Rs 100, making them accessible to a wide population.
  • Speed: Results available within 10 minutes, enabling prompt medical interventions.
  • Comprehensive Testing: Capability to assess 20 different health parameters through the AffEx Health Platform.
  • State-Wide Implementation: Starting in Goa, with potential for expansion to other regions.

This partnership between the DHS and AMF represents a significant step towards enhancing public health infrastructure in Goa, leveraging innovation to address healthcare disparities and promote early diagnosis for better health outcomes.
