Guntur GGH Service Block Construction Accelerates, Offering Major Relief to Patient Attendants
In a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, the construction of the long-pending service block at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur has finally gathered substantial pace. This facility is specifically designed to provide much-needed shelter and basic amenities to the countless patient attendants who arrive from across the state, addressing a critical gap in support services.
Addressing Overcrowding at a Major Public Healthcare Hub
GGH stands as one of the largest public healthcare institutions in Andhra Pradesh, catering to nearly 1,300 in-patients at any given time. With such a heavy patient load, the number of accompanying attendants has been consistently substantial. This has historically led to severe overcrowding and a stark lack of proper resting spaces within the hospital premises, creating chaotic and uncomfortable conditions.
The proposed service block is being developed as a dedicated support facility to directly address this persistent issue. Once fully completed, it is poised to become one of the most significant infrastructural additions within the hospital complex. It will offer attendants safe, hygienic, and organised spaces, effectively replacing the current makeshift arrangements in corridors, verandahs, staircases, and open areas.
A Project Revived After Political and Financial Hurdles
The project's journey has been marked by delays. It was initially planned and approved during the TDP regime back in 2017, with a proposed G+4 structure estimated to cost approximately ₹10 crore. Construction work began but unfortunately stalled following a change in state government, despite an investment of around ₹2.5 crore already being made.
The revival came when industrialist and BJP leader Tulasi Ramachandra Prabhu stepped forward, pledging a crucial ₹10 crore to complete the stalled project. With his personal involvement and active monitoring, the construction on-site has regained significant momentum, bringing the long-awaited facility closer to reality.

The new service block is designed to be a comprehensive support center. Planned features include:
