ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar's HIV Laboratory Achieves NABL Accreditation Milestone
The HIV-1 viral load testing laboratory at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Bhubaneswar has been honored with the prestigious NABL accreditation, marking a significant achievement in India's healthcare sector. This facility stands out as the sole non-National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) laboratory across the country to receive this distinguished recognition, underscoring its commitment to excellence in diagnostic services.
Understanding NABL Accreditation and Its Importance
The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) operates under the Quality Council of India (QCI), serving as a key accreditation body that ensures laboratories adhere to stringent quality standards. Accreditation from NABL involves a comprehensive evaluation process, where institutions are assessed on multiple critical parameters to guarantee reliability and accuracy in testing procedures.
Rigorous Evaluation Process for Quality Assurance
According to official sources from RMRC Bhubaneswar, the QCI team conducted an exhaustive review to grant the NABL accreditation. This involved:
- Verifying adherence to established guidelines and protocols.
- Assessing how staff report HIV test results to ensure clarity and precision.
- Evaluating biosafety measures to protect both personnel and samples.
- Inspecting the quality and storage conditions of samples to maintain integrity.
An official from RMRC Bhubaneswar highlighted that the accreditation was awarded after a meticulous examination of approximately 100 files, demonstrating the laboratory's dedication to maintaining top-tier standards in every aspect of its operations.
Impact on HIV Testing and Public Health
Since May 2024, the laboratory has already conducted around 36,000 HIV tests, showcasing its vital role in Odisha's healthcare landscape. The state is supported by 15 anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centers spread across 14 districts, emphasizing the need for accurate and reliable testing facilities.
Sanghamitra Pati, director of RMRC Bhubaneswar, emphasized the importance of proper viral load assessment in HIV testing. She stated, "Properly assessing viral load is crucial in HIV testing. Our Cobas 5800 (Roche) machine is utilized for this purpose. By maintaining high quality, we can significantly contribute to controlling HIV infections. This certification reflects our unwavering commitment to a top-quality control approach."
Unique Position in India's Laboratory Network
India hosts 10 non-NACP laboratories, but RMRC Bhubaneswar is the only one to have secured NABL accreditation. This distinction not only enhances the laboratory's credibility but also sets a benchmark for other institutions aiming to improve their testing standards. The accreditation is expected to bolster efforts in HIV prevention and management, aligning with national health goals.
In summary, the NABL accreditation for ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar's HIV laboratory represents a major step forward in ensuring quality healthcare diagnostics, with potential positive impacts on public health outcomes in Odisha and beyond.
