Karnataka Government Announces Major Cardiac Care Expansion with 600 New Beds
The Karnataka state government has unveiled a significant expansion of cardiac care infrastructure across multiple centers of the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICSR). This strategic move directly addresses the escalating burden of heart disease throughout the state, a crisis fueled by modern lifestyle factors.
Details of the New Cardiac Care Facilities
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently announced the establishment of a new 100-bed Jayadeva facility on the premises of the GBA multispecialty hospital in Govindarajanagar, Bengaluru. Furthermore, the state budget has confirmed that the 300-bed Jayadeva Hospital in Hubballi will be inaugurated later this year. An additional 200 beds will be integrated into the existing Jayadeva Hospital in Mysuru.
These combined initiatives will result in a total of 600 new cardiac care beds being added to the state's healthcare network. This expansion will augment the existing capacity of 1,995 beds spread across various Jayadeva centers in Karnataka.
Current Cardiac Infrastructure and the Pressing Need
The main campus of Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru currently operates with 1,084 beds. Within the city, two satellite centers contribute additional capacity: 68 beds at the ESI Hospital in Rajajinagar and 72 beds at KC General Hospital in Malleswaram. Outside the capital, the Mysuru center has 400 beds, and the Kalaburagi facility maintains 371 beds.
Dr. B Dinesh, Director of SJICSR, emphasized the critical need for this expansion. "The cardiac burden on the state is increasing day by day," he stated. "This surge is fueled by the rampant consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal substances, compounded by comorbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Almost all of our beds are consistently occupied."
Dr. Dinesh explained the operational benefits: "With such satellite centers, we can ensure the patient load at the main campus reduces. More importantly, it guarantees that patients receive expert care within the golden hour during a cardiac emergency. The wait time for critical operations will also significantly decrease."
Rising Paediatric Cases and Government Response
The director also highlighted a concerning trend in paediatric cardiology. "We are witnessing more paediatric cases of 'hole in the heart' as well. While some instances are genetic, others are a direct result of substance abuse, unhealthy lifestyles during pregnancy, and the presence of comorbidities," he added.
Echoing these concerns, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil outlined the government's proactive strategy. "We are acutely aware of the burden at the main campus in Bengaluru. Now, even the outpatient departments (OPDs) at our Mysuru and Kalaburagi centers are experiencing overcrowding," Minister Patil said.
"With the addition of beds in Mysuru and the inauguration of the new hospital in Hubballi, we aim to substantially ease this burden," he affirmed. The minister further revealed that the government is actively exploring the establishment of another satellite center of Jayadeva Hospital in north Bengaluru, indicating a continued commitment to decentralizing and strengthening cardiac care access across the region.
This comprehensive expansion plan represents a critical governmental response to a growing public health challenge, aiming to provide timely, life-saving cardiac care to the citizens of Karnataka.
