Karnataka Government Greenlights Major Medical Infrastructure Project in Puttur

In a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in coastal Karnataka, the state government has officially sanctioned the construction of a substantial 300-bed medical hospital in Puttur. This move fulfills a long-standing demand from local residents and represents a major investment in regional healthcare facilities.

Project Details and Financial Allocation

The new medical facility will be established at Sediyapu in Bannur village, with the government approving a substantial budget of Rs 180 crore for the project. The hospital will occupy a generous 40-acre plot of land that has already been identified and reserved by the revenue department specifically for this healthcare initiative.

MLA Ashok Kumar Rai confirmed that along with the financial allocation, the Department of Medical Education has granted final approval for both the design and structural plans of the hospital building. This comprehensive approval process ensures that all necessary technical and administrative requirements have been met before construction commences.

Evolution from Medical College Proposal to Teaching Hospital

The project has undergone significant evolution since its initial conception. During the 2025-26 budget session, the government announced plans to establish a new medical college in Puttur while simultaneously upgrading the existing 100-bed taluk hospital. However, after thorough examination of proposals submitted by the chief engineer of the Health and Family Welfare Department, with additional input from the Finance Department, authorities determined that establishing a medical college at the existing hospital site was not feasible.

This realization prompted a strategic shift in approach. Since matters concerning medical college hospitals fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Medical Education, the project was formally transferred to this department through a government order dated December 4, 2025. Based on revised proposals, officials decided to construct a new 300-bed teaching hospital at Sediyapu in Bannur village of Puttur taluk.

Project Implementation and Future Plans

The chief engineer prepared a detailed estimate of Rs 180 crore for the comprehensive project and successfully sought administrative approval for this substantial investment. Notably, the tender process for hospital construction has already been completed, indicating that the project is moving swiftly toward implementation.

MLA Ashok Kumar Rai revealed that a foundation laying ceremony will be conducted in the near future to officially commence construction. Once the hospital building is completed, work will begin on the medical college facility, creating a comprehensive healthcare and medical education complex in the region.

This development represents a significant enhancement to healthcare infrastructure in the Puttur region, addressing both immediate medical service needs and long-term medical education requirements. The 300-bed capacity represents a substantial increase over the existing 100-bed taluk hospital, promising improved healthcare access for residents across the district.
