MLC Advocates for Satellite Medical Centers in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D'Souza has made a significant appeal to the government, urging the establishment of satellite branches of two premier medical institutes in the city. He specifically mentioned the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research and the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology as institutions that should extend their services to Mangaluru through satellite facilities.
Government Response and Financial Considerations
According to D'Souza, the medical education minister has responded to this proposal, indicating that setting up such satellite branches for cardiovascular and oncology specialities in Mangaluru might require an investment of nearly Rs 300 crore. The government is actively exploring various options to make this initiative feasible.
The government is considering engaging in tie-ups with private hospitals to provide treatment for economically disadvantaged patients, D'Souza revealed. This approach could potentially bridge the gap between public healthcare needs and private sector resources.
Cancer Awareness Initiatives and Survey Release
D'Souza made these remarks during the release of a comprehensive survey book titled ‘A Promising New Path in Cancer Awareness- 10,000+ Household Cancer Awareness Survey Report’ at the Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO) on Saturday. The event highlighted the growing concern about cancer prevalence in the country.
"Cancer cases are increasing across the nation, and many people fear the disease primarily due to the exorbitant costs associated with treatment," D'Souza noted. He emphasized the importance of making cancer treatment more accessible and affordable for all sections of society.
Commitment to Spreading Awareness
The MLC pledged to ensure that the survey report prepared by MIO reaches people throughout the state. "I will bring the cancer awareness campaigns of the institute to the notice of the government and request them to consider MIO's model for creating cancer awareness and ensuring treatment accessibility across the state," he stated.
D'Souza also appealed to the Mangalore Institute of Oncology to collaborate with the government to make treatment more accessible for patients who cannot afford private healthcare services.
Expert Insights on Cancer Trends
Dr. D. Suresh Rao, managing trustee of Sanjeevni Cancer Seva Trust and director of MIO, provided crucial insights during the event. He pointed out that the majority of cancer incidence in India is reported among people in the age group of 45-60 years.
"Considering this risk, it is essential that we emphasize early diagnosis and prevention. The government should launch comprehensive campaigns focused on early detection and preventive measures," Dr. Rao emphasized.
He further explained that while surveys and awareness programs can be conducted by institutions like MIO, substantial intervention requires government involvement due to the scale of initiatives needed. "Many people consider cancer a death sentence. We need to transform this fear into motivation for early detection through proper awareness and accessible healthcare services," he added.
Event Participation
The event was attended by media personality Walter Nandalike, along with other stakeholders interested in improving healthcare accessibility and cancer awareness in the region. The gathering underscored the collective effort needed to address healthcare challenges in Mangaluru and beyond.
