The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for heatwave conditions across Vidarbha, warning that students appearing for the NEET re-test on Sunday may face scorching weather. The alert comes as the southwest monsoon remains delayed, widening the rainfall deficit in the region.
Exam Timing and Weather Advisory
The NEET re-test is scheduled between 2pm and 5pm, which are peak afternoon hours when temperatures are highest. The IMD has predicted heatwave conditions in pockets of Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal on June 21, with the heatwave expected to persist until at least June 23.
NTA Guidelines for Exam Centres
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has directed examination centres to ensure adequate arrangements for candidates and their families. These include shaded waiting areas and drinking water for parents and guardians accompanying candidates. According to the NTA guidelines, centres must prioritize the comfort and safety of all attendees during the re-test.
Health Officials' Advice
Health officials have advised NEET candidates and accompanying parents to remain hydrated, carry water bottles, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight. The IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre emphasized that heatwave conditions could pose health risks, particularly during the afternoon exam slot.
Regional Impact and Precautions
The delayed monsoon has exacerbated the heatwave, with authorities urging precautions during travel to exam centres. Candidates are advised to plan their journeys to minimize time spent outdoors and to use sun protection. The Orange Alert signifies that heatwave conditions are likely and could affect vulnerable groups, including students traveling long distances.
