NIMS Hyderabad Embarks on Major Expansion to Boost Public Healthcare in Telangana
In a landmark initiative to fortify public healthcare infrastructure in Telangana, the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad is poised for a substantial expansion, backed by enhanced funding from the state government. This ambitious project, spanning 19.54 acres and covering over 26 lakh square feet, is estimated to cost ₹1,698 crore. Upon completion, it will augment the hospital's bed capacity by 2,000, elevating the total from 1,639 to 3,639 beds, a move designed to alleviate patient congestion and elevate specialised treatment services at this premier government institution, which serves patients from across Telangana and neighbouring states.
Construction Progress and Advanced Infrastructure Details
According to Dr Bheerappa Nagari, Director of NIMS, civil construction on the main hospital complex is advancing steadily. "Eight floors of the main building are already completed, and work is continuing on the remaining five floors," he stated. He noted that construction of the emergency block commenced later due to the relocation of a government school previously on that site, with two floors of this block now finished. The expansion encompasses:
- A new outpatient block to streamline patient flow.
- Expanded emergency services for improved trauma care.
- Additional ICU facilities to handle critical cases.
- Modern hospital infrastructure, including 38 state-of-the-art modular operation theatres.
These operation theatres will be fully air-conditioned and equipped with high-efficiency particulate air filtration systems, ensuring a near-zero bacteria environment conducive to complex and highly specialised surgeries. Hybrid laboratories will further support advanced medical procedures.
Focus on Paediatric Care and New Sub-Specialties
A key highlight of the expansion is the introduction of eight new sub-specialties, with a strong emphasis on paediatric care. These include:
- Paediatric nephrology for kidney-related issues in children.
- Rheumatology to address autoimmune and inflammatory disorders.
- Immunodeficiency management for immune system deficiencies.
- Cardiology for heart conditions in paediatric patients.
- Oncology for childhood cancer treatment.
Dr Bheerappa emphasised, "Many of these sub-specialities are currently limited in the public healthcare sector. Their addition will significantly strengthen specialised care for children," underscoring the project's commitment to enhancing paediatric healthcare access.
Enhanced Diagnostic and Research Capabilities
The expansion will also significantly boost diagnostic and research capabilities at NIMS. The new facility will feature:
- Three CT scan machines for detailed imaging.
- Two MRI machines for advanced diagnostics.
- Hybrid cath labs for interventional procedures.
- CT-MRI integrated facilities for comprehensive assessments.
- An advanced digital laboratory to support cutting-edge research.
The value of the new medical equipment is estimated at around ₹100 crore, reflecting a substantial investment in modern technology. Officials project that this large-scale upgrade will markedly strengthen emergency, trauma, and specialised care services, while expanding access to advanced and affordable treatment for patients reliant on the public healthcare system, thereby addressing critical healthcare gaps in the region.
