SGPGI Lucknow Hosts Intensive Workshop to Combat Hospital-Acquired Bloodstream Infections

In a significant move to bolster infection control measures and enhance patient safety, the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow organized a comprehensive two-day workshop. The event was specifically designed to train nursing officers and students in the prevention of Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI), which are recognized as a major challenge in modern hospital care.

Focus on Standard Protocols and Best Practices

Organized by the Hospital Infection Control Cell on March 18-19, the programme was conducted under the RISE (Raising Infusion Standards through Education) initiative. It concentrated on addressing bloodstream infections linked to intravenous catheters, with experts highlighting that such infections can lead to increased complications, prolonged hospital stays, and higher treatment costs. However, they emphasized that these issues can be largely prevented through strict adherence to established standard protocols.

The training meticulously covered best practices in handling both central venous and peripheral intravenous catheters. Prof Gyan Chand underscored the critical importance of maintaining aseptic conditions to effectively prevent hospital-acquired infections. Medical superintendent Prof R Harsvardhan pointed out that strict compliance at the bedside is essential, as even minor lapses can significantly elevate infection risks.

Interactive Learning and Hands-On Demonstrations

Chief medical superintendent Prof Devendra Gupta highlighted the pivotal role of nursing supervisors in ensuring consistent adherence to these vital protocols. The workshop adopted an innovative "walk-in and learn" model, allowing participants to attend one-hour sessions in small, manageable batches. This approach facilitated more personalized and effective learning experiences.

Hands-on demonstrations were a key component of the training, utilizing mannequins and simulation-based modules to provide practical insights. Participants received thorough instruction in catheter care, early detection of infection risks, and the handling of various clinical scenarios. This practical focus aimed to equip nursing staff with the skills necessary to implement infection control measures in real-world hospital settings.

Strengthening Infection Control Systems

Officials at SGPGI emphasized that such capacity-building initiatives are vital for strengthening overall infection control systems. By enhancing the skills and knowledge of nursing personnel, the institute aims to ensure better health outcomes for patients in tertiary care hospitals. The workshop represents a proactive step towards reducing healthcare-associated infections and improving the quality of medical care provided at the facility.

The event concluded with a strong message on the importance of continuous education and vigilance in infection prevention, reinforcing the commitment of SGPGI Lucknow to advancing patient safety through targeted training programmes.
