Victoria Hospital's New 10-Storey Q-Block to Add 629 Beds in Bengaluru
After nearly seven years of construction, the state-run Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru is set to inaugurate its 10-storey 'Q-block' on May 2. This significant expansion will add 629 beds to the hospital's current capacity of 1,000, marking a major boost to public healthcare infrastructure in Karnataka.
Enhancing Patient Care and Reducing Wait Times
Victoria Hospital is one of the most visited public health facilities in the state, with its outpatient department (OPD) seeing a daily footfall of 700 to 1,000 patients. The new block is expected to substantially reduce waiting times for OPD patients, as highlighted by Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil. This development aims to improve accessibility and efficiency in medical services for the community.
Detailed Layout and Special Features
Dr. Kavya ST, director-cum-dean of Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute (BMCRI), which is affiliated with Victoria Hospital, provided insights into the block's design. The first five floors will house general wards, including departments for surgery, orthopaedics, and medicine. The next two floors will function as special wards and operation theatres, with one floor specifically designated for VVIPs. Two floors are reserved for a surgical complex equipped with eight operation theatres. Additionally, a helipad on the terrace is planned to be functional in the future, enhancing emergency response capabilities.
Adjustments and Challenges in Planning
Originally, the 10-storey structure was planned to accommodate 1,000 beds. However, the allocation of space for two floors to the helipad led to a reduction in bed capacity. In a recent directive, Minister Patil has instructed authorities to convert one floor into an ICU complex. Hospital authorities are currently deliberating on how to integrate ICU beds without compromising other essential capacities, indicating ongoing adjustments to optimize the facility's use.
Financial and Operational Updates
The construction costs have escalated over the years, with the initial estimate of Rs 68 crore rising to Rs 90 crore. Dr. Deepak S, medical superintendent of Victoria Hospital, reported that tenders for procuring beds and equipment have been floated. Recruitment of nurses, Group D staff, HR personnel, and other essential staff is actively ongoing. Equipment for two floors has already arrived, and remaining processes are in progress. Notably, the orthopaedics department from the old block will be relocated to the new building, streamlining operations and improving patient care.
This inauguration represents a critical step forward in addressing the growing healthcare demands in Bengaluru, promising enhanced medical services and infrastructure for residents.
