AIIMS Bhubaneswar Achieves Historic Milestone with First Deceased Donor Liver Transplant
In a significant medical breakthrough, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully performed its first-ever deceased donor liver transplant, marking a pivotal moment in the institution's healthcare capabilities. The landmark procedure was conducted earlier this month, strategically timed ahead of World Liver Day, highlighting the importance of organ donation awareness.
Generous Organ Donation by Homoeopathic Doctor
The transplant became possible thanks to the selfless decision of Radha Parhi, a homoeopathic medical officer from Bhadrak district. Despite living with a chronic platelet disorder for years, Parhi had consistently expressed her wish to donate her organs to help others. Her family honored this noble intention following her tragic brain stem death, which was officially declared by doctors on April 2.
This act of generosity underscores the critical role of organ donation in saving lives, particularly in a country where donor shortages remain a major challenge for transplant programs.
Successful Transplantation and Patient Recovery
The liver transplant surgery was performed on April 3, with Parhi's liver being transplanted into a 46-year-old male recipient. According to an official statement released by AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the surgical gastroenterology team executed the complex procedure with precision.
The recipient is currently recovering well and is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon, reflecting the success of the operation and the quality of post-transplant care provided.
Expert Medical Team and Leadership
The transplant was led by Dr. Bramhadatta Pattnaik, with expert mentorship provided by Dr. Viniyendra Pamecha from the prestigious Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi. This collaboration brought together top-tier expertise to ensure the procedure's success.
A multidisciplinary team of specialists played a crucial supporting role, including professionals from:
- Anaesthesia
- Gastroenterology
- Critical care medicine
This coordinated effort highlights the comprehensive approach required for successful organ transplants, involving multiple medical disciplines working in harmony.
Honoring the Donor's Legacy
In a moving tribute to Radha Parhi's extraordinary contribution, AIIMS Bhubaneswar organized a Guard of Honour ceremony in her memory. The ceremony was led by Medical Superintendent Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, symbolizing the institution's deep respect for donors who give the gift of life through organ donation.
This historic transplant not only represents a technical achievement for AIIMS Bhubaneswar but also serves as a powerful reminder of how individual acts of generosity can transform medical outcomes and save lives. The successful procedure establishes AIIMS Bhubaneswar as an emerging center for advanced transplant surgeries in Eastern India.
