In a significant medical development, Usha Joseph, a resident of Punnapra in Kerala, has been discharged from Amrita Hospital in Kochi following a successful surgery to remove a pair of artery forceps that had been left inside her abdomen since 2021. The incident, which has raised serious concerns about medical negligence, occurred after Joseph underwent a procedure at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital three years ago.

Usha Joseph initially underwent surgery at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital in 2021. However, it was later discovered that doctors had inadvertently left the artery forceps in her abdomen during that operation. This oversight led to persistent and severe health issues for Joseph, causing her significant discomfort and complications over the subsequent years.
Recently, allegations of medical negligence surfaced, prompting the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the matter thoroughly. The committee was tasked with determining the circumstances that led to the forceps being left inside Joseph's body and identifying any lapses in medical protocol.
Findings of the Inquiry Committee
The inquiry committee, after a detailed investigation, cleared the doctor who performed the original surgery of direct negligence. According to the committee's report, the doctor had stitched the surgical wound only after confirming with the assisting nurse that all instruments used during the procedure had been properly collected and accounted for. This finding suggests that the error may have occurred due to a breakdown in communication or procedural oversight rather than intentional neglect.
Despite this clearance, the incident has highlighted critical issues in surgical safety protocols and the importance of double-checking instruments before concluding operations.
Free Treatment and Surgical Intervention
In a compassionate response, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, which manages Amrita Hospital, provided free treatment to Usha Joseph. The surgical team at Amrita Hospital, led by Dr. O V Sudheer, head of the gastro surgery department, along with Dr. K V Sanjeevan, head of the urology department, and Dr. Radhamani K, head of the gynaecology department, performed the complex procedure to remove the artery forceps from Joseph's abdomen.
During the surgery, the medical team successfully extracted the forceps, which had been causing Joseph ongoing health problems. Following the removal, the instrument was handed over to the Ambalappuzha police, who are currently investigating Joseph's formal complaint regarding the incident.

Doctors at Amrita Hospital reported that Usha Joseph's condition was satisfactory after the surgery. She has shown positive signs of recovery and was discharged from the hospital, marking a hopeful turn in her long-standing medical ordeal.
