Reconciliation in the CM's Office
The resolution took place in the office of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's principal media adviser, Naresh Chauhan. The two main individuals involved—sacked senior resident Dr Raghav Narula and patient Arjun Panwar—offered apologies to each other and, significantly, to the people of Himachal Pradesh for the inconvenience caused by their scuffle.
Chauhan described the entire episode as unfortunate but noted that persistent dialogue had ultimately paved the way for an amicable solution. The visual of the doctor and the patient shaking hands and embracing was a powerful gesture aimed at public reconciliation.
Both Sides Explain the Sudden Altercation
In their statements, both Narula and Panwar clarified that the physical confrontation on December 22 was a sudden escalation without any premeditated intent. They expressed regret over the incident spiralling out of control and affecting the broader community.
Dr Narula's mother struck a poignant note, appealing for unity. She stated that both the doctor and the patient were like her own children, emphasising the need for harmony and understanding.
Gratitude and an Unexpected Wedding Invitation
Arjun Panwar extended his thanks to the Himachal Pradesh government and the public for their support throughout the ordeal. He sincerely regretted the disruption caused, which had triggered a statewide doctors' strike.
In a lighter moment hinting at the new-found peace, Panwar jokingly mentioned that he would be happy to attend Dr Narula's upcoming wedding—if invited. Panwar's father credited Chief Minister Sukhu for ensuring justice was served and welcomed the peaceful resolution to the contentious issue.
The resolution brings to an end a tense period for the state's medical infrastructure, which had been strained by the strike action initiated by doctors in solidarity with their colleague. The direct intervention and mediation by the Chief Minister's office proved crucial in bridging the gap between the two parties.
