Ahmedabad Residents Block Road Over Polluted Water Supply

Ahmedabad: Residents of Punjavala ni Chali in Khokhra staged a dramatic protest on Wednesday by blocking traffic to draw attention to the issue of polluted drinking water supply in their locality. Around 3 pm, they placed cement blocks across the road outside the chali, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt. The blockade lasted until a team from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and police arrived at the scene and intervened, after which the road was cleared.

AMC Response and Resident Grievances

An AMC official explained the situation, stating, “The issue was polluted drinking water in Punjavala ni Chali. Repairs were initiated, but some people opposed the work, saying it would block the chali’s already narrow lanes. As an interim measure, water tankers have been arranged for the residents.” However, a resident countered the official’s statement, alleging, “The problem has remained unresolved for a long time despite repeated complaints to the AMC. Hence, local women took to the streets, demanding immediate clean drinking water.”

Ongoing Water Quality Concerns

The protest highlights the persistent water quality issues faced by residents in certain parts of Ahmedabad. While the AMC claims to have provided tankers, locals insist that a permanent solution is needed to ensure safe and clean drinking water. The incident underscores the challenges in urban water supply management, especially in narrow lanes where infrastructure upgrades are difficult.
