Food Poisoning Outbreak Strikes Devotees at Andhra Pradesh Festival
A local religious celebration in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, turned into a public health emergency after numerous attendees fell ill from consuming contaminated beverages. The incident occurred during the Kondamma Thalli Utsavams in Singupuram village on April 1 and 2, casting a shadow over the festive proceedings.
Contaminated Badam Milk Blamed for Illnesses
Devotees, seeking relief from the intense summer heat, purchased and drank chilled Badam Milk from mobile vendors operating stalls at the festival. Badam Milk, a popular flavored milk beverage in the region, is typically enjoyed as a refreshing treat. However, shortly after consumption, many individuals began experiencing severe symptoms indicative of acute food poisoning.
The reported symptoms included:
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain and cramps
- Acute diarrhea
- Fever in some cases
Swift Medical and Administrative Response
The situation prompted an immediate response from local authorities. Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar confirmed that 18 cases have been officially reported to the Singupuram Primary Health Centre (PHC). All affected individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, and officials have stated their conditions are now stable.
"A special medical team was swiftly dispatched to the site to monitor the victims and ensure they received the highest standard of care," a district administration spokesperson noted. The rapid deployment aimed to prevent further complications and contain the outbreak.
Police Investigation and Vendor Detentions
In the wake of the incident, which sparked panic and rumors within the community, the Srikakulam district police formed a special investigative team. Their primary objective is to identify all vendors who sold Badam Milk during the two-day festival.
Law enforcement has already taken three flavored milk vendors into custody for detailed interrogation. The police action underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the suspected case of mass food poisoning.
Officials Point to Sub-Standard Beverages
Preliminary observations from the medical and health department officials point squarely at the sale of sub-standard beverages as the cause of the illness. The officials have warned that stringent legal action will be initiated against any vendors found responsible for the contamination.
"We are investigating the source and preparation of the milk sold. If vendors are found negligent or in violation of food safety standards, they will face severe consequences," a health department official stated.

Local residents expressed anger and demanded strict action against the vendors. The festival, dedicated to the local deity Kondamma Thalli, typically draws large crowds. Vendors had set up temporary stalls, selling the Badam Milk for Rs 40 per drink.
"We consume these drinks trusting the vendors, especially during festivals. This incident has broken that trust and endangered lives, including children," a local devotee commented. The community's demand for accountability highlights the broader issue of food safety at public gatherings.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact number of people affected, which may be higher than the currently reported figures. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of food hygiene and regulatory oversight at mass events, particularly during extreme weather conditions when the consumption of chilled beverages is high.
