Bengaluru Sees Alarming 90+ Eye Injuries During Diwali Celebrations | Firecracker Safety Alert
Bengaluru: 90+ Eye Injuries from Diwali Firecrackers

The festive lights of Diwali in Bengaluru were dimmed by a disturbing reality as hospitals across the city reported a staggering number of eye injury cases directly linked to firecracker mishaps. Medical facilities have been overwhelmed with more than 90 patients suffering from serious ocular trauma during the celebration period.

Hospital Emergency Rooms Flooded with Victims

Leading eye care institutions across India's tech capital witnessed an unprecedented influx of emergency cases. Narayana Nethralaya alone treated approximately 35 patients, while Minto Eye Hospital recorded around 30 cases. The numbers continued to climb with Vasan Eye Care reporting 15 injuries and Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital handling 12 serious cases.

Young Victims Bear the Brunt

Disturbingly, a significant portion of those affected were children and teenagers who suffered severe eye damage. Medical professionals expressed deep concern about the pattern of injuries, which included:

  • Chemical burns from sparklers and other fireworks
  • Corneal abrasions and foreign object penetration
  • Retinal damage from close-range explosions
  • Eyelid burns and tissue damage

Doctors Issue Stern Warning

Ophthalmologists across Bengaluru have sounded the alarm about the recurring nature of these preventable injuries. Many patients required immediate surgical intervention, with some facing the possibility of permanent vision impairment. The medical community emphasized that most victims were bystanders rather than those actively handling the fireworks.

The Silent Danger: Green Firecrackers

Despite the promotion of so-called "green crackers" as safer alternatives, medical reports indicate these too have caused significant injuries. The term "green" primarily refers to reduced air pollution rather than enhanced safety features, creating a false sense of security among consumers.

A Call for Responsible Celebrations

As Bengaluru recovers from this year's traumatic Diwali season, healthcare professionals are urging both authorities and the public to prioritize safety measures for future festivals. They recommend:

  1. Strict adult supervision during firecracker use
  2. Maintaining safe distances from ignition points
  3. Keeping buckets of water and first aid kits readily available
  4. Considering community fireworks displays instead of individual use

The alarming statistics serve as a crucial reminder that festive joy should not come at the cost of vision and safety.
