Cortalim MLA Antonio Vas on Friday urged health authorities to take immediate action against sewage overflowing in the open along the national highway near Verna hill in Quelossim. Vas conducted a joint site inspection with health officials and members of the Quelossim panchayat. During the visit, it was observed that sewage was flowing from housing complexes located on the hill behind the Toyota showroom and draining onto the Margao–Panaji highway, causing a stench and posing a health risk to commuters.
Repeated Complaints Ignored
“Despite repeated complaints, the health authorities have failed to act. Their inaction has allowed these housing complexes to continue releasing sewage in the open, while local elected representatives are being blamed,” Vas said. The issue has remained unresolved for several years, leading to environmental damage and public health hazards.
Demand for Urgent Measures
Vas demanded urgent corrective measures to stop the discharge and prevent further harm. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of sanitation norms and accountability of housing complexes. The MLA assured that he would follow up with higher authorities to ensure swift action.
