The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced that Ward 100, which primarily encompasses the Shipra Sun City society in Indirapuram, has achieved 100% sterilisation of community dogs. According to the civic body, a census identified 182 community dogs in the ward. Of these, 102 were sterilised, while the remaining 80 were adopted. This milestone makes Ward 100 the first in the city to accomplish this feat since the implementation of the Animal Birth Control Rules. The GMC oversees a total of 110 wards.
Target for Additional Wards
GMC veterinary officer Anuj Singh stated that the corporation has set a target to replicate this success in 20 more wards by the end of the year, specifically wards 91 to 101 and 1 to 10. "We are in the process of identifying strays with the assistance of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and other organisations. Currently, we have two operational Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, and a third at Sidharth Vihar will become operational by the end of this month. Together, these facilities can sterilise over 100 dogs per day, which will enhance our sterilisation capacity. We are confident that the target set for this year can be easily achieved. We have already achieved 100% sterilisation targets in over 20 societies in Crossings Republik, RNE, and Vijay Nagar areas," Singh explained.
Helpline and Microchipping Initiatives
The GMC has launched a helpline number for residents to provide information about community dogs in their areas. Additionally, the corporation plans to microchip the dogs. "Microchips have been installed in sterilised dogs to help track community dogs and prevent duplication of records," Singh added.
Stray Dog Population and Sterilisation Progress
According to the 2021 stray census, Ghaziabad had approximately 48,000 strays. Rough estimates suggest the number has since risen to around 65,000. Officials reported that the GMC sterilised 10,137 strays between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Overall, 47,099 strays have been sterilised in the city to date.
