The Haryana Human Rights Commission on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the National Crime Records Bureau's Crime in India-2024 report, which highlighted that Haryana recorded the highest crime rate against children in the country.
A full bench comprising chairperson Justice Lalit Batra, member (judicial) Kuldip Jain and member Deep Bhatia observed that 7,547 cases of crimes against children were registered in Haryana in 2024, marking a 17.9% increase over 2023. The crime rate stood at 82.8 cases per lakh child population.
Urgent Intervention Sought
Calling for urgent intervention and institutional accountability, the commission directed senior officers of the home, women and child development, school education and police departments to submit reports on preventive policing, child protection mechanisms, rehabilitation measures, school safety protocols and implementation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and Juvenile Justice Acts.
Next Hearing Scheduled
The next hearing is scheduled for August 6, 2025. The commission expects comprehensive reports from the concerned departments to address the rising incidents of crimes against children in the state.
