In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) in Kanpur held a crucial district-level meeting, charting a strict course against the menace of counterfeit drugs and adulterated food.
District Magistrate's Directives for Public Safety
The meeting, chaired by District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh at the new auditorium in Sarsaiya Ghat, placed public interest and health as the paramount priority. DM Singh issued clear instructions to the drug department, mandating sharp vigilance over the manufacture and sale of spurious medicines. He emphasized that there should be no compromise in preventing drug misuse and protecting citizens from harmful products.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the drug department officer's performance, the District Magistrate called for strengthening intelligence sources. He demanded solid legal action against all elements involved in the illegal trade of counterfeit and adulterated drugs within the district.
Food Safety Performance and Hygiene Drive
A detailed review of the food safety department's work revealed significant findings. In the financial year 2025-26, the district's mobile food laboratory, 'Food Safety on Wheel,' tested a total of 5,250 food samples. Out of these, 192 samples were declared substandard, highlighting ongoing challenges with food quality.
On a positive note, under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's (FSSAI) Eat Right Challenge programme, 409 establishments in Kanpur have so far received hygiene rating certifications. This initiative aims to promote transparency and better practices among food businesses.
Proactive Measures and Awareness Campaigns
To ensure sustained improvement, DM Jitendra Pratap Singh laid out an action plan for food safety officers. He instructed each officer to hold at least one meeting per month with local trade associations. The agenda for these meetings is to increase awareness about food safety rules, the dangerous ill-effects of adulteration, and the legal provisions that can land violators in serious trouble.
Furthermore, officers were directed to ensure strict compliance with hygiene standards in all hotels and restaurants, with regular reminders and checks. A major focus will be on running special campaigns against adulterators in every area. The DM also asked officials to maintain special surveillance on those involved in fake packaging of products and to take effective, punitive action against them.
This comprehensive strategy from Kanpur's administration signals a robust crackdown on the twin evils of fake drugs and adulterated food, aiming to create a safer marketplace for all residents.
