Mysuru PHC Doctor Suspended for Drinking on Duty

Mysuru district health authorities have taken strict action against Dr Anil Kumar, medical officer at Mellahalli primary health centre (PHC), by relieving him of duty and recommending disciplinary proceedings. The decision came after social media posts allegedly depicted the doctor in an inebriated state and smoking on the PHC campus.

Official Confirmation

Mysuru district health officer (DHO) Dr PC Kumaraswamy confirmed the action to TOI, stating that Dr Anil Kumar has been directed to report to the health commissioner in Bengaluru. The health department initiated disciplinary proceedings after the doctor allegedly created a disturbance while consuming alcohol during duty hours. Immediate action was ordered once the matter came to light.

Zero Tolerance for Indiscipline

Dr Kumaraswamy emphasized that indiscipline would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He stated that doctors and health staff must discharge their responsibilities with social commitment while delivering healthcare services. Any conduct contrary to this principle would invite strict disciplinary measures.

Alternative Arrangements Made

The DHO said alternative arrangements have been made at the Mellahalli PHC, and another medical officer has been posted to ensure that public health services continue without disruption.

Background of the Doctor

According to Dr Kumaraswamy, Dr Anil Kumar has been serving at the PHC for the last three years and has been in government service for 15 years. He noted that the doctor's behaviour had changed in recent times due to family-related issues. The department had attempted counselling to bring him back to the mainstream, but it did not yield results.

The health authorities remain committed to maintaining discipline and ensuring quality healthcare services for the public.
