Pune Airport Activates Ebola Screening for International Passengers

Pune Airport Implements Ebola Screening Protocols

In response to the World Health Organisation's declaration of the Ebola outbreak as a public health emergency, Pune airport authorities have activated comprehensive health surveillance and passenger screening measures for all incoming international travelers.

Self-Declaration Forms for All Flyers

Airport Health Officer (APHO) Suhas Dhandore informed that every international passenger arriving in Pune must complete a self-declaration form. "The form will be provided onboard by the cabin crew and includes questions about health status and travel history. It must be submitted at immigration. We are particularly monitoring travelers who have visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda," he stated.

Surveillance Despite No Direct Flights

Although Pune does not have direct flights to the affected countries, there is a risk of passengers transiting through these nations. Currently, Pune operates direct flights to Dubai and Bangkok. Airport Director Santosh Dhoke said, "The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued detailed advisories and operational guidelines for all ports of entry. We are complying with these directives to screen flyers."

Quarantine and Tracking Measures

If a passenger has traveled to any of the affected countries, the state surveillance officer will be alerted and their movements tracked. Those who have been in contact with an Ebola patient or exhibit symptoms will be quarantined at Naidu Hospital. All international arrivals must pass through a special corridor equipped with thermal scanners. An airport official confirmed, "So far, no Ebola cases have been detected."

Coordination and Training

Authorities have initiated coordination meetings and preparedness reviews with all airport stakeholders. A follow-up meeting with airline operators is scheduled to assess implementation workflows and address operational challenges. Training sessions for APHO personnel on Ebola screening protocols and the use of personal protective equipment are underway. Additional training will be provided to Customs, immigration staff, and airline personnel. The director urged passengers to cooperate with authorities.
