Human Progress Through Challenge: A Philosophical View on Exploitation and Competition

Self-interest stands as the most powerful passion inherent in every individual, both men and women. Each person is brimming with desires, and there is a universal necessity felt to fulfill these personal aspirations. This fundamental human condition has historically led to widespread corruption, injustice, and various forms of societal evils.

The Inevitability of Social Evils and the Path to Self-Preservation

According to the principles of creation, every individual enjoys freedom, making it impossible to impose a complete check on social evils. In such a scenario, what should one do? Eliminating all social evils is not feasible. The only viable option is to protect oneself from the depredations of others. In essence, this means learning to live without being exploited in a world where exploitation is pervasive. While exploitation is never absent, it is always possible to safeguard oneself from its effects. Instead of complaining about problems, the key is to address them in a way that turns the situation to your advantage.

Challenges as a Catalyst for Human Development

This prevailing global situation is not an evil; rather, it is a tremendous boon. It creates challenges and competition, which are the sole drivers of human progress and all forms of development. Ultimately, it is this very dynamic that unlocks the full potential of humanity. To illustrate this point, consider a visit to a zoo with a large deer park designed to mimic nature as closely as possible—an apparently ideal environment for wild animals. However, as explained by a zoo official, the absence of predators caused the deer to lose their fertility. In their natural jungle habitat, deer faced constant danger from predators like wolves, but in the zoo enclosure, the lack of challenges led to mental and physical inactivity, harming their reproductive systems.

Lessons from Nature: The Role of Predators in Revitalization

To address this, the zoo introduced a wolf into the enclosure periodically, forcing the deer to run helter-skelter to save their lives. Once the deer felt threatened and became normally active, their fertility was revived, and they regained the capability to reproduce. This natural law applies not only to animals but also to humans. All individuals are born with immense potential, but to unfold it, they must confront constant challenges. What philosophers often refer to as the 'problem of evil' is essentially the problem of challenge, and it is this that sustains human creativity.

Embracing Life's Challenges as Stepping Stones

Life is inherently full of challenges. Every disadvantage serves as a challenge—poverty, difficulty, unpleasant situations, and even disabilities are all challenges. These are blessings in disguise, acting as stepping stones to progress. By facing and overcoming such obstacles, individuals and societies can achieve growth and advancement, turning adversity into opportunity.
