Historic Milestone: Nandankanan Zoo Welcomes First Parma Wallaby Birth
In a significant achievement for wildlife conservation, the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has announced the first-ever successful birth of a Parma wallaby at the facility. Zoo authorities confirmed this historic event on Saturday, marking a breakthrough in their breeding program for this unique marsupial species.
A Breakthrough After Decades of Effort
For the first time in the zoo's history, this particular species has successfully bred within the park's premises. An official statement from the zoo authorities revealed that while Nandankanan maintained wallabies from April 1973 to April 1976, no births were recorded during that earlier period. This makes the current birth particularly noteworthy for conservationists and animal enthusiasts alike.
The arrival of the newborn joey brings the total population of Parma wallabies at Nandankanan to three individuals. This represents a meaningful step forward in preserving this species within controlled environments.
Observation and Development Milestones
Zoo staff confirmed the joey's presence on Saturday after animal care personnel observed the characteristic 'head poking' behavior from its mother's pouch. This developmental milestone typically occurs four to five months after birth in wallabies, indicating the joey has reached an important stage in its growth cycle.
The parent pair arrived at Nandankanan from John and Grooves Farm in Hyderabad in December 2023 and has been carefully socialized since August 2025. Parma wallabies have a remarkably short gestation period of approximately 35 days, after which the newborn joey instinctively crawls from the birth canal into the mother's protective pouch.
Specialized Care and Monitoring
Once inside the pouch, the joey attaches to a teat where it receives essential nourishment through suckling while benefiting from the mother's body heat for thermoregulation. This dual support system is crucial for the marsupial's early development and survival during its most vulnerable phase.
Given that the joey remains dependent on its mother for temperature regulation and won't be fully weaned until approximately ten months of age, both mother and offspring are receiving exceptional care. Zoo authorities have implemented continuous monitoring through CCTV surveillance in enclosure number 37G to ensure their ongoing health and safety.
