Lunar Eclipse Creates Confusion Over Holika Dahan Timing in Kanpur
The year's first lunar eclipse on Tuesday has sparked significant confusion regarding the auspicious timing for observing Holika Dahan in Kanpur. While some community groups have scheduled the ritual for the evening of March 3, others firmly assert that it should be performed in the early hours after Monday midnight, leading to divided preparations across the city.
Conflicting Schedules and Astrological Guidance
According to the Hindu calendar, Holika Dahan is observed on the Purnima Tithi of the Phalgun month. This year, the Purnima tithi commences at 5:55 PM on March 2 and concludes at 5:07 PM on March 3. The commonly suggested auspicious window for Holika Dahan falls between 6:22 PM and 8:50 PM on March 3, with the festival of colors, Holi, to be celebrated the following day on March 4.
However, astrologer Vishwabandhu Bajpai offers a different perspective. He recommends performing Holika Dahan between 12:50 AM and 2:02 AM on Tuesday. Bajpai explains that since the ritual must be conducted during the Purnima Tithi, which remains until 4:33 PM on March 3 before Pratipada begins, the early hours of March 3 are more appropriate for the observance.
Significance and Preparations in Kanpur
Holika Dahan commemorates the legend of Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, symbolizing the eternal victory of good over evil. Devotees traditionally perform Holika Dahan puja before lighting wooden logs. Offerings such as coconut, grains, sweets, and new harvest crops are made to the flames, followed by a parikrama (circumambulation) of Holika to seek protection from negative energies and blessings for happiness and good health.
In Kanpur, preparations are in full swing despite the timing confusion. Holika Dahan will be organized at 464 designated locations across the city, each decorated with effigies of Holika. Artisans have crafted effigies ranging from 5 to 15 feet in height, with prices varying between Rs 1,000 and Rs 12,000, reflecting the scale and intricacy of the designs.
Market Activity and Security Measures
Meanwhile, local markets remained crowded on Monday as residents purchased traditional Holi items including colors, gujhiya (sweet dumplings), and water sprinklers in anticipation of the celebrations. The Kanpur police have implemented strict security arrangements to ensure a safe and peaceful observance of both Holika Dahan and Holi, with increased patrols and surveillance at the 464 celebration sites.
The lunar eclipse has thus introduced an unexpected layer of complexity to this year's Holi festivities in Kanpur, highlighting the intersection of astronomical events with religious traditions and community practices.
