Rare Automotive Gems Shine at Mumbai's Modern Classic Rally 2026

The fourth edition of the Autocar India Modern Classic Rally 2026 concluded on Sunday, showcasing an impressive collection of over 140 automotive icons from the 1970s to the 2010s. This prestigious event, held at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai, has quickly become a landmark gathering for collectors and enthusiasts across the country.

Exclusive Vehicles Steal the Spotlight

Among the head-turners on display was the country's only known Dodge Viper, owned by the Maharaja of Gondal, which drew significant attention from attendees. The rally also featured classic cars from the late Ratan Tata's personal garage, adding a touch of historical significance and nostalgia to the exhibition.

Curated by Perseus Bandrawalla, the annual rally aims to celebrate rare machinery and strengthen India's modern classic movement. In recent years, it has emerged as a crucial platform for supporting engineering milestones and highlighting the cultural impact of automobiles.

A Celebration of Automotive Heritage

The two-day event culminated in a spectacular rally through Mumbai's streets on Sunday, with a convoy of classic cars driving from the Grand Hyatt through the Sea Link and Coastal Road stretch. This public display not only showcased the vehicles but also engaged the local community in the celebration of automotive history.

Speaking about the event, Bandrawalla emphasized the importance of modern classics, stating, "Modern classics represent a golden era of driving, where engineering excellence and mechanical purity came together to create cars that continue to inspire generations."

More Than Just Collector's Items

Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee highlighted the broader significance of these vehicles, noting that modern classic cars are more than mere collector's items. "They're rolling history, they spark conversation, and they bring people together through a shared passion for driving. The Modern Classic Rally continues to champion that spirit," he remarked.

The rally's success underscores the growing interest in automotive preservation and appreciation in India, serving as a testament to the country's evolving car culture and its connection to global automotive heritage.
