Udupi Diocese Churches Conduct Special Prayers for Peace in West Asia

In response to escalating tensions in West Asia, churches under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Udupi organized special prayers for peace on Sunday. This initiative followed a call from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, as the region faces heightened conflict between Israel and Iran, with global implications including US military movements and humanitarian concerns.

Clergy Emphasize Dialogue and Humanitarian Impact

During morning Mass services, priests across the diocese offered dedicated prayers for peace. Several churches also held adoration of the Blessed Sacrament before Mass, where congregants prayed for the reduction of war fears and for divine guidance to world leaders to ensure stability in West Asia.

The clergy highlighted the devastating effects of war, noting that innocent lives are lost, leaving families with enduring grief. They also pointed out that explosives used in conflict zones cause severe environmental damage. Emphasizing that war is not a solution to crises, they urged world leaders to prioritize peace through dialogue rather than military action.

Key Figures Lead Prayers and Express Concerns

Special prayers were led by prominent clergy members, including:

  • Rev Fr Charles Menezes at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Udupi
  • Rev Fr Ferdinand Gonsalves at Milagres Cathedral
  • Rev Fr Paul Rego at Holy Rosary Church
  • Rev Fr Alban D'Souza at St Lawrence Basilica

Apostolic administrator of the Udupi Diocese, Rev Fr Gerald Isaac Lobo, stated that humanitarian suffering from war and instability inflicts "deep wounds on the global human family." He expressed particular concern for Indian citizens living and working in Middle Eastern countries, many of whom support their families and contribute significantly to both the Church and India's development. Lobo called on world leaders to implement measures to ensure their safety during this uncertain period.

Public Outreach and Daily Prayer Initiatives

Public Relations Officer Rev Fr Dennis D'Sa, in his sermon, noted that while every human seeks peace, harmony, and happiness, the recent war-like situation in West Asia has created anxiety among Indians and others in the Gulf region. He reinforced the message that world leaders should promote dialogue over violence to establish peace and harmony.

In addition to the Sunday prayers, the faithful have been requested to offer special Rosary prayers for peace daily from March 8 to 14. March 13 will be observed as a day of fasting and prayer, with sacrifices offered for world peace and the safety of those affected by violence.

This spiritual response underscores the Church's commitment to global peace and the well-being of communities impacted by conflict, reflecting broader concerns about the humanitarian and environmental toll of warfare in West Asia.
