Annual Velliangiri Hills Pilgrimage Commences in Coimbatore
The revered annual pilgrimage to the Velliangiri Hills, famously celebrated as the 'South Kailash', officially began on Friday with the ceremonial opening of the gates leading to the seventh hill. This significant event marks the initiation of a spiritually enriching four-month journey that draws devotees from across the region.
Devotees Gather in Large Numbers
Thousands of enthusiastic devotees started assembling at the foothills in Poondi from Thursday night itself, eagerly awaiting the commencement of their sacred trek. In the early hours of Friday, officials from the forest department and temple authorities formally inaugurated the entry gates to the hill path. As the gates swung open, pilgrims embarked on their ascent, chanting powerful slogans such as "Om Namah Shivaya", "Thennaadudaiya Sivane Potri", and "Vettri Vel Muruganukku Arogara", creating an atmosphere of deep devotion and spiritual fervor.
The Sacred Trek to Velliangiri Hills
Located on the picturesque outskirts of Coimbatore, the Velliangiri Hills attract lakhs of Shiva devotees annually. These pilgrims undertake the challenging and arduous trek across seven steep hills to worship the swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva lingam situated at the summit. The diverse group of devotees, including energetic youth and determined elderly persons, were observed climbing the hills with walking sticks and immense enthusiasm, showcasing their unwavering faith and physical dedication.
The pilgrimage season has been officially permitted from now until May 31, providing devotees with a generous window of four months to visit the hills and complete their spiritual journey at their own pace.
Enhanced Security and Safety Measures
At the foothills, forest officials have significantly stepped up security protocols and thorough checks to ensure a safe pilgrimage experience. In a bid to prevent potential forest fires, carrying plastic bottles, covers, and inflammable items such as beedis and cigarettes has been strictly prohibited. Given the frequent movement of wild elephants in the area, forest personnel are actively patrolling the route and issuing crucial safety instructions to pilgrims to mitigate risks and enhance awareness.
Additionally, well-equipped first-aid centres have been strategically set up along the trekking route to provide immediate medical assistance in case devotees experience any health issues during the demanding climb. Authorities have earnestly urged all pilgrims to diligently follow the established safety guidelines and cooperate fully with officials to ensure a smooth, secure, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage season for everyone involved.
