FIR Filed in Ayodhya Ram Mandir Donation Case
An FIR has been lodged over allegations of embezzlement of donations meant for the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, even as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the matter. A police official confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that the case has been registered based on a complaint received.
Details of the Complaint
The complaint, filed by a local devotee, alleges that a significant portion of the funds collected from devotees across the country was misappropriated by certain individuals involved in the fundraising campaign. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating and criminal breach of trust." The exact amount allegedly embezzled has not been disclosed, but sources indicate it could run into crores of rupees.
Ongoing SIT Investigation
The SIT, formed earlier this year to probe financial irregularities in the temple construction fund, is already examining documents and bank records. A senior SIT officer stated, "We are coordinating with the local police to ensure a thorough investigation. The FIR will help us gather more evidence and question the accused." The probe has so far led to the questioning of several trustees and contractors associated with the temple trust.
Impact on Temple Construction
The development comes as a setback to the Ram Mandir construction, which has been a landmark project for the Hindu community. The temple trust has assured devotees that the construction will not be affected, emphasizing that the funds are being managed transparently. However, the allegations have raised concerns among donors about the accountability of the fundraising process. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation progresses.
