CSMIA handles 55.5 million passengers in 2025, sets new record

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has cemented its status as India's premier aviation gateway by posting its highest-ever annual passenger traffic in the calendar year 2025. The airport successfully managed a staggering 55.5 million passengers, setting a new benchmark for operational capacity and growth in the post-pandemic era.

Record-Breaking Passenger and Flight Numbers

The total footfall of 55.5 million marks a significant year-on-year increase of 1.3% over the 54.8 million recorded in 2024. When compared to 2023, the growth is even more pronounced at 7.6%. A detailed breakdown reveals that international travel contributed 16.3 million passengers, while domestic travel accounted for a substantial 39.2 million.

Complementing the passenger surge, Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) also soared to unprecedented levels. CSMIA recorded a total of 3,31,011 ATMs for the year. This figure comprises 92,141 international movements and a dominant 2,38,870 domestic movements. This represents an impressive increase of approximately 25% compared to the ATM numbers from 2022.

Peak Periods and Key Destinations

The airport witnessed its busiest month in January 2025, which saw nearly five million travelers. November followed closely with about 4.9 million passengers. A single-day record was set on 29 November 2025, when a whopping 1,75,925 passengers passed through the airport's terminals. The October-December quarter was the strongest period overall, accounting for 14.36 million passengers.

In terms of destinations, the Middle East region dominated international travel, representing a massive 48.8% of all international traffic. The Asia-Pacific region followed at 28.2%, and Europe accounted for 14.5%. Key city-pairs included Dubai (15% share), London Heathrow (7.5%), and Abu Dhabi (7.5%). On the domestic front, Delhi led with a 17% share, followed by Bengaluru at 10% and Goa at 6%.

Network Expansion and Future Trajectory

The record numbers were supported by a significant expansion of CSMIA's network throughout 2025. The airport added several new international connections, enhancing direct access to cities like Almaty, Amman, Bali (Denpasar), Copenhagen, Fujairah, Krabi, Manchester, and Tbilisi. Domestically, connectivity was boosted with new flights to Adampur, Amravati, Hindon, Jharsuguda, Porbandar, and Solapur.

The data for CY25 underscores a robust recovery and growth phase for Indian aviation, with CSMIA at its forefront. The consistent increase in both passenger throughput and flight movements highlights the airport's critical role in facilitating both business and leisure travel, while its expanded route map strengthens Mumbai's position as a global aviation hub. The highest single-day ATM count of 1,036 was also recorded on 21 November 2025, showcasing the airport's handling capabilities during peak demand.
