The new year has brought a fresh blanket of snow to the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, marking the first significant snowfall of 2024. Several key areas, including the districts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall starting Tuesday night, offering much-needed respite from a prolonged dry spell.
White Blanket Covers Key Passes and Valleys
The snowfall was particularly active in the higher mountain passes and valleys. The famous Rohtang Pass, situated at an altitude of over 13,000 feet, received substantial snow. Other affected areas included the Kunzum Pass, which connects Lahaul with the Spiti Valley, and the high-altitude regions of Kinnaur district. The picturesque town of Kalpa, along with areas like Pooh and Nako, also saw a fresh layer of snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.
This weather event comes after a period of unusually dry conditions in the hills during the latter part of December. The local population and farmers, who depend on winter precipitation for water and agriculture, have welcomed this development. The snowfall is expected to replenish groundwater sources and benefit the horticulture sector, which is vital to the state's economy.
Transport and Travel Disruptions Reported
The sudden snowfall has led to immediate disruptions in road transport. As a precautionary measure, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has closed the Rohtang Pass for all vehicular traffic. This crucial mountain pass is a lifeline for the Lahaul valley and its closure is a standard procedure following heavy snow to ensure traveller safety and allow for clearance operations.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. While the higher reaches are experiencing snow, the mid and lower hills, including popular tourist destinations like Shimla, Manali (town), and Dharamshala, witnessed rainfall. The Meteorological Department in Shimla has reported that the current western disturbance affecting the region is likely to cause widespread rain or snow until January 5th.
Weather Outlook and Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that this wet spell will continue over the next few days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the state on Thursday. Furthermore, the IMD has issued a warning for dense fog in the plains and lower hills on the mornings of January 4th and 5th, which could impact road and air travel.
Residents and tourists are advised to exercise caution. Travellers planning to visit the high-altitude regions or cross the mountain passes should check the latest road status with the BRO or local authorities. The drop in temperature following the snowfall also necessitates adequate winter preparedness.
This first snowfall of the year has set a positive tone for the winter season in Himachal Pradesh, promising good health for its glaciers, rivers, and apple orchards in the coming months.
