2025 Travel Report: Indians Prioritise Mental Health & Authentic Experiences
Indian Travel Habits 2025: Emotion Over Instagram

The year 2025 has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of Indian travel. A comprehensive survey, the India Habit Index 2025, provides compelling evidence that how Indians explore the world has undergone a profound transformation. Moving away from performative tourism, the modern Indian traveller is now driven by a quest for emotional well-being, genuine connection, and lived experiences.

The Rise of Emotionally-Driven Travel

The most significant finding is that a majority of Indians, 51.55% (6,529 respondents), now plan trips primarily for relaxation and escape. This marks a decisive break from pre-pandemic patterns dominated by checklist sightseeing and social media visibility. The new ethos values conscious, authentic engagement with destinations over curated online personas. Travellers are less about boasting and more about silently absorbing a place's beauty, often with a mindful approach to preserving its sanctity.

When asked what specifically helped them unwind, an overwhelming 68.17% (4,277 people) cited being close to nature—mountains, beaches, and forests. Spending quality time with loved ones was the choice for 15.78% (990 respondents), while 8.07% (506 respondents) sought a digital detox. Wellness activities (4.29%) and solitude for personal reflection (3.70%) were other notable preferences, painting a clear picture of travel as a tool for mental recharge.

Adventure, Culture, and Food: The New Triggers

Following relaxation, adventure emerged as the second key inspiration, motivating 24.22% (3,068 people) of travellers. Within this segment, nearly half (46.51% or 1,360 respondents) preferred mountains and treks. Road trips appealed to 21.27%, while water sports and wildlife safaris were closely matched at around 13.7%. Interestingly, only 4.72% were drawn to high-adrenaline thrills, indicating a preference for immersive over extreme adventures.

Cultural exploration motivated 11.96% (1,515 people) of travellers. More than half of them (54.47% or 761 respondents) visited historic landmarks. Local festivals (17.97%) and culinary traditions (17.75%) were powerful draws, followed by art, crafts, and folk performances.

Food itself proved to be a powerful emotional anchor. For 43.53% of respondents (4,956 people), cravings and mood dictated their culinary choices while travelling. A substantial 64.74% sought comfort food, highlighting how meals provide stability and emotional satisfaction on the road, far outweighing the desire for mere novelty.

The Evolving Role of Social Media and Practical Choices

While social media remains part of the journey, its role has evolved dramatically. A significant 56.02% (6,479 people) stated they travelled to create memories. Tellingly, 80.13% (5,177 respondents) enjoyed capturing pictures of nature and wildlife, while selfies ranked last. The focus has shifted from the traveller to the destination, with visuals that tell a story taking precedence. There's also a marked trend towards virgin, unexplored locations over trendy, crowded spots.

On the practical side, emotion guided the 'why,' but smart choices dictated the 'how.' Budget-friendly stays topped the list of factors enabling easier travel at 33.03%. However, the emphasis was on hassle-free and safe experiences, with cleanliness, safety, and direct transport options being critical. Indians opted for convenience-driven travel rather than purely budget-centric trips.

The Core Takeaway: Travel as Emotional Connection

Ultimately, what made travel memorable in 2025 were emotional connections and shared experiences with loved ones. Nostalgia also played a powerful role. Travel transformed from a mere destination-checking exercise to a profound search for belonging—be it through a lingering taste, an unforgettable memory, or finding familiarity in a new environment.

In essence, the India Habit Index 2025 confirms that Indian travellers are no longer just sightseers; they are experience-seekers and emotional pilgrims. The year 2025 will be remembered as the time when Indian travel grew up, prioritising authenticity, mental well-being, and deep, personal connections over external validation.
