Central Government Pledges Assistance for Baramati Airstrip Development
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has formally expressed its willingness to extend support to the Maharashtra state government in developing the Baramati airstrip. This announcement comes at a critical juncture as the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) continues its probe into the tragic plane crash that occurred on January 28, claiming the lives of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and four other individuals.
Investigation Progress and Technical Insights
According to sources familiar with the matter, the AAIB's preliminary investigation report into the fatal accident is likely to be completed within approximately one-and-a-half months. Pune MP and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed that he plans to discuss the progress of the investigation with AAIB officials during his current visit to Delhi, stating, "AAIB has the black box. Since I am in Delhi, I will speak to AAIB on the progress of investigation."
Aviation experts have begun analyzing available evidence, with one pilot explaining anonymously that video footage showing the aircraft executing a sharp left bank before crashing near the Baramati airstrip suggests the possibility of an aerodynamic stall. "Stalling mainly happens when the angle between the wind and the incoming air exceeds the critical angle of the wing, creating turbulent air, which results in the aircraft descending," the pilot elaborated. "The ill-fated aircraft was flying at a low altitude before landing. The AAIB report will give the precise picture of what really happened."
Infrastructure Development and Government Coordination
The Baramati airstrip, which features a table-top runway, was transferred to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd last year. A senior official from the Civil Aviation Ministry emphasized that the Maharashtra government should prioritize the development of this aviation facility. "The airport belongs to state government. If they need anything from the ministry, it will be provided. This includes all permissions," the official stated clearly.
Another official highlighted the operational history of the airstrip, noting that "flying schools used the facility for years and there have been many landings." The same source suggested that CCTV footage from the January 28 incident indicates low visibility may have contributed to the tragic sequence of events, adding that "the state government needs to work towards development of the airstrip" with the Civil Aviation Ministry ready to assist with technical surveys including an obstacle limitation survey (OLS).
Pending Government Response and Future Implications
When contacted about the state government's plans regarding Baramati airstrip development, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had not responded to inquiries by the time of reporting. The dual focus on both investigating the tragic accident and improving aviation infrastructure reflects the complex challenges facing regional air transportation in Maharashtra.
This development initiative represents a significant opportunity to enhance aviation safety and infrastructure in the region, potentially preventing similar tragedies while improving connectivity for the Baramati area and surrounding regions of Maharashtra.
