New Cross-Border Bridge in Uttarakhand to Enhance India-Nepal Connectivity
A significant infrastructure project aimed at strengthening ties between India and Nepal is nearing completion in the Himalayan region. A motorable bridge being constructed over the Kali River at Baluakot in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand is expected to be fully operational within the next three months, according to official statements. This development marks a crucial step in improving accessibility and fostering regional integration.
Project Details and Historical Context
The bridge, which spans 110 meters in length, is being built by India as part of a bilateral agreement signed with Nepal in February 2022. The agreement specifically targeted the construction of this bridge at Charchum (Baluakot) in Dharchula tehsil of Pithoragarh district. Work on the ambitious project commenced in August 2022, with an estimated expenditure of around Rs 32 crore invested so far, as confirmed by Arun Arora, the executive engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD).
Once completed, this bridge will become the second motorable crossing in Uttarakhand along the India-Nepal border, joining the existing bridge at Banbasa. The primary objective of this infrastructure initiative is to connect remote border areas of Uttarakhand with Nepal's Sudurpaschim province, thereby improving access to hill districts across the international boundary.
Current Status and Additional Infrastructure
Pithoragarh District Magistrate Ashish Kumar Bhatgai provided an update on the project's progress, stating that the bridge construction is nearly complete. However, he highlighted that Nepali authorities conducted an inspection of the site several months ago and requested the development of a downstream connectivity road to ensure seamless integration.
In response to this request, a 130-meter stretch of the connectivity road is currently under construction and is projected to be finished within the same three-month timeframe as the bridge. Bhatgai emphasized that this complementary infrastructure is essential for maximizing the bridge's utility and facilitating smooth cross-border movement.
Security and Administrative Measures
To manage the increased cross-border traffic and ensure security, comprehensive arrangements are being put in place. Bhatgai detailed plans for the establishment of check posts near the bridge, which will house various departments including:
- Customs
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
- Police
- Forest Department
Additionally, Nepal has committed to constructing similar departmental posts on its side of the border. Instructions have been issued to the concerned departments to expedite the completion of these facilities, ensuring a coordinated and secure operational environment once the bridge becomes functional.
