India delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan at the United Nations on Wednesday after Pakistan's delegate raised the issue of Kashmir during a UN Security Council meeting. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, categorically stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and that any discussion on the region is strictly an internal matter.
India's Strong Response at the UN
Ambassador Kamboj exercised the right of reply after Pakistan's delegate made remarks concerning the situation in Kashmir. She said, "Jammu and Kashmir has been, is, and will always remain an integral part of India. Any reference to the region by Pakistan is unwarranted and constitutes interference in India's internal affairs." She further added that the UN Charter prohibits any member state from intervening in matters that are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state.
India's response came during a UN Security Council debate on the maintenance of international peace and security. The Indian envoy also reminded Pakistan of its obligations under bilateral agreements and international law to refrain from supporting cross-border terrorism. "Pakistan must stop its state-sponsored terrorism and dismantle the infrastructure of terror operating from its soil," she asserted.
Pakistan's Allegations Rejected
Pakistan's representative had alleged human rights violations in Kashmir and called for UN intervention. India outrightly rejected these allegations, terming them baseless and motivated. Ambassador Kamboj pointed out that Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on India's internal matters, especially given its own record on human rights and democracy. She cited the fact that Pakistan continues to harbor UN-designated terrorists and has a history of violating UN resolutions on terrorism.
India also highlighted the positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The region has witnessed sustained peace, economic growth, and democratic processes, including successful local body elections. The Indian government has focused on development and empowerment of all communities in the region, ensuring equal rights and opportunities.
International Support for India's Position
Several member states at the UN have expressed support for India's position on Kashmir, recognizing it as a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. They have called for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with the Simla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration. India has consistently maintained that any discussion on Kashmir must be held bilaterally, without third-party involvement.
Ambassador Kamboj concluded by stating that India remains committed to peace and stability in the region but will not tolerate any attempts to undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity. "Pakistan should focus on improving the lives of its own people rather than peddling false narratives about India," she said.
Background of the Dispute
The Kashmir issue has been a long-standing point of contention between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. India has always maintained that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, while Pakistan claims it as a disputed territory.
