India has strongly urged Bangladesh to take decisive action against radical Islamist groups and ensure the full protection of minority communities, following the reported desecration of an image of Lord Ram during an Islamist demonstration in Gaibandha district, northern Bangladesh.
Diplomatic Pressure from New Delhi
During a media briefing on Tuesday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed New Delhi's deep concern over the escalating targeting of religious institutions and symbols. "We have seen reports from Bangladesh regarding acts of desecration involving Hindu deities and their images, which have sparked protests. We expect the Bangladeshi government to curb the extremists there and guarantee the safety of the minority community," Jaiswal stated.
The incident has triggered widespread demonstrations by the Hindu minority, who make up approximately 8% of Bangladesh's population of roughly 170 million. The protests have centered on the government's perceived inaction against the perpetrators.
Ram Statue Construction Suspended
The backlash from Islamist groups and the reported defacement of the Lord Ram image stem from the ongoing construction of a Lord Ram statue in Gaibandha, which is slated to become the tallest of its kind in Bangladesh. Work on the monument was suspended following alleged intimidation by hardline factions. Hindu organizations have organized widespread demonstrations across Dhaka, demanding the immediate apprehension of those responsible for the desecration.
Broader Context of Minority Safety
This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Hindu communities and religious sites in Bangladesh, raising concerns about the safety of minorities in the predominantly Muslim nation. The Indian government has consistently called for the protection of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communal harmony and religious freedom.
The MEA's statement underscores India's expectation that Bangladesh will take concrete steps to curb extremist elements and prevent further acts of desecration. The situation remains tense, with Hindu groups vowing to continue protests until the culprits are brought to justice and the statue project can proceed without fear of intimidation.
