India Calls for Restraint and De-escalation
India has urged all parties involved in the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran to exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday expressing deep concern over the fresh strikes exchanged between the two nations in West Asia, which threaten regional stability and global security.
The statement emphasized that peace and stability in the region are of paramount importance, not only for the countries directly involved but for the entire international community. India reiterated its longstanding position that all disputes should be resolved through peaceful means and constructive engagement.
Fresh Strikes Escalate Tensions
The latest round of hostilities began when the US launched airstrikes against Iranian-backed militia positions in Syria and Iraq, reportedly in retaliation for a drone attack that killed three American soldiers. Iran responded by targeting US military installations in the region with ballistic missiles. The exchange has raised fears of a wider war that could engulf multiple nations and disrupt global oil supplies.
According to reports, at least 10 people were killed in the US strikes, while Iran claimed its missiles caused significant damage to US assets. The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides vowing to take further action if provoked.
India's Strategic Concerns
India has significant strategic interests in West Asia, including energy security, the welfare of its large diaspora population, and trade ties. The region accounts for nearly 60% of India's crude oil imports, and any disruption could have severe economic repercussions. Additionally, over 9 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making their safety a top priority for New Delhi.
In its statement, India called on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and avoid any actions that could lead to further escalation. The Ministry of External Affairs also expressed readiness to contribute to peace efforts in the region, in line with India's role as a responsible global actor.
International Community Reacts
The United Nations and several world powers have also urged restraint. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate de-escalation, warning that the region is on the brink of a dangerous confrontation. The European Union offered to mediate talks between the US and Iran, while Russia and China condemned the US strikes as a violation of international law.
In a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "India is deeply concerned about the recent developments in West Asia. We call upon all parties to exercise restraint, avoid further violence, and resolve differences through dialogue and diplomacy. The path of confrontation benefits no one."
Historical Context and Path Forward
The US and Iran have been at odds for decades, with tensions reaching a peak in 2020 after the US killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. The current escalation is the most serious since then, with both sides showing little willingness to back down. Analysts warn that a full-scale conflict could have catastrophic consequences for the entire region, including the potential for a humanitarian crisis and a spike in global oil prices.
India has historically maintained good relations with both the US and Iran, and has often acted as a bridge between different stakeholders. Given its diplomatic ties and strategic autonomy, New Delhi is well-positioned to play a mediatory role. However, the effectiveness of such efforts will depend on the willingness of the parties to engage in meaningful dialogue.
