India Rescinds Special Travel Requirements for Yemen
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has withdrawn the 2017 notification that imposed special conditions on Indian citizens travelling to Yemen, citing an evolved security situation. The new order, issued on July 11, 2026, under the Passports Act, 1967, revokes the earlier notification dated October 3, 2017, with immediate effect.
Background of the 2017 Restrictions
The 2017 notification was introduced due to the "precarious security situation" in Yemen, which was then mired in a civil war and armed conflict. The restrictions required Indian nationals to obtain prior permission or meet specific conditions before travelling to Yemen. According to the MEA, the decision to lift these conditions comes after a reassessment of the current security landscape.
Current Advisory for Travelers
Despite the withdrawal of legal restrictions, the MEA has not changed its travel advisory for Yemen. Indian nationals planning to travel to the country are advised to continue following government travel advisories and security updates issued from time to time. The ministry emphasized that while the situation has evolved, travelers should remain cautious.
Official Statement and Signatory
The notification was issued by the MEA and signed by Joint Secretary BS Mubarak. The ministry noted, "the situation in Yemen has since evolved, prompting the government to withdraw the earlier order." This step reflects India's ongoing assessment of global security conditions and its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad.
