Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland on Friday, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit New Zealand in four decades. The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties, coming soon after the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Warm Welcome at Auckland Airport
Modi was received at the airport by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. "Reached Auckland a short while ago. Thankful to Prime Minister Luxon for the welcome at the airport," Modi posted on X soon after his arrival.
Calling the visit historic, Modi said he looked forward to holding wide-ranging talks with Luxon on the entire spectrum of India-New Zealand relations. He is also scheduled to address the Indian community in Auckland on Saturday.
Focus on Trade, Investment, and Security
The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education, agriculture, technology and regional security, besides reviewing progress on the recently signed FTA.
The visit assumes significance as New Zealand seeks to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce its dependence on a single export market. Officials believe the trade pact and the Prime Minister's visit could open new opportunities for businesses in both countries and further deepen economic engagement.
Strategic Partnership in the Indo-Pacific
The visit is also expected to reaffirm the growing strategic partnership between India and New Zealand amid evolving geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific region.
