Western Railway Expands 15-Car Train Services to Virar-Dahanu Stretch

In a significant development for Mumbai's suburban rail network, Western Railway is poised to introduce 15-car train services for the first time on the Virar to Dahanu route. This upgrade from the existing 12-car formations marks a major step forward in addressing the chronic overcrowding issues faced by daily commuters in the northern suburbs.

Enhanced Capacity and Commuter Relief

A total of 17 train services will be upgraded from 12-car to 15-car configurations. Of these, eight services will operate on the Virar–Dahanu section, while the remaining nine will run between Churchgate and Virar. This expansion is expected to provide much-needed relief to thousands of passengers, particularly during peak hours, by increasing passenger capacity and improving travel comfort.

Officials from Western Railway have emphasized that this initiative will streamline operations and reduce pressure on the busy suburban network. With rising population and daily ridership in areas like Vasai, Palghar, and Dahanu, the move is seen as a timely upgrade to enhance connectivity and commuter convenience.

Operational Details and Timeline

The new 15-car services are scheduled to be launched in April. Currently, two new 15-car rakes are stationed at the Virar car shed, where they are undergoing rigorous testing and trials to ensure smooth implementation.

Hemant Savara, BJP MP from Palghar, commented on the development, stating, "We have been actively pursuing this with the ministry to introduce 15-car train services on the Virar–Dahanu stretch. This will effectively reduce overcrowding and simultaneously boost capacity."

Impact on Suburban Network

Until now, 15-car services have been limited to the Churchgate–Virar section, with the Virar–Dahanu stretch operating only 12-car trains. The extension of longer trains to this route is anticipated to significantly alleviate congestion and improve overall efficiency across one of Mumbai's busiest suburban corridors.

This strategic upgrade underscores Western Railway's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of suburban commuters and fostering a more sustainable and comfortable travel experience in the region.
