NEW DELHI: The skill development ministry has evaluated nearly 15,000 private and government industrial training institutes (ITIs), encompassing over 14 lakh students, through a grading system akin to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) used for higher education institutions.

Top Performers in ITI Grading

For the 2026-27 academic year, 466 ITIs achieved a grade above 9 on a 10-point scale, an increase from 403 last year. The Government ITI, World Bank (Mahila) in Meerut secured the highest grade of 9.8. It was followed by Government ITI in Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Dalmia Private ITI in Sundargarh (Odisha), and Government ITI (Jhansi), each earning a grade of 9.7.

Grade Thresholds and New-Age Courses

Nearly 11,600 ITIs received a grade above 4, compared to 11,928 in the previous year. Institutes with a grade above 4 are permitted to introduce new-age courses, including 3D printing, internet of things, drone technician, and solar technician. A total of 126 ITIs have been classified as non-graded (NG) due to insufficient data, as they are newly established.

Grading Parameters

The Directorate General of Training, the apex nodal agency for regulating vocational training, developed a grading scale from 0 to 10 based on eight parameters. For the current academic year, admission (30%) and passing results (30%) carry the highest weight, followed by computer-based examination (10%) and average marks obtained (10%). Enrolment of women and diversity in trades, including new emerging courses, each account for 5%.
