Uttarakhand Accountant Arrested for Bribe in Toilet Construction Scheme
In a significant crackdown on corruption, an accountant posted at the Lamgara block office in Almora district, Uttarakhand, was arrested by the vigilance establishment in Haldwani on Wednesday. The arrest came after the official was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe to release funds for a government-sanctioned toilet construction project.
Details of the Bribery Incident
Harish Singh Bisht, the accused accountant, was apprehended while taking Rs 15,000 from a complainant on the block office premises. According to officials, the bribe was demanded to facilitate the release of a Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) linked to a sanctioned toilet construction work valued at Rs 3 lakh. The vigilance team acted swiftly on a complaint filed by the beneficiary, who had been repeatedly pressured to pay money to access the funds under a government sanitation scheme.
"The accused was apprehended on the spot while accepting the bribe. He has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway," stated an official from the vigilance department. This case underscores a troubling pattern where beneficiaries of essential sanitation initiatives are allegedly forced to pay bribes to receive their entitled funds.
Broader Investigation and Context
Investigators are now probing whether similar demands were made in other toilet construction cases within the Lamgara block, raising concerns about systemic corruption in rural development projects. The vigilance team's action highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring transparent governance and equitable access to public welfare schemes.
Notably, this arrest marks the second vigilance action in Almora within a week. Earlier, a forester was caught accepting Rs 25,500 as a bribe for facilitating resin-related work, indicating a broader issue of corruption in the region. These incidents have sparked calls for stricter monitoring and accountability mechanisms to protect vulnerable communities from exploitation.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and integrity in implementing government schemes, particularly those aimed at improving basic amenities like sanitation. Authorities are urging citizens to report any such malpractices to help curb corruption and ensure that public funds reach their intended beneficiaries without hindrance.
