Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Parking Chaos with New Guidelines
In the bustling commercial zones of Ahmedabad, evenings often descend into chaos as cars overflow onto footpaths, two-wheelers clog turning lanes, and residents navigate through spaces never intended for parking. This daily disorder has long plagued the city, but now, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is taking decisive action to restore order.
Strict Rules Place Responsibility on Property Owners
On Sunday, the AMC rolled out stringent guidelines that squarely place the burden of parking management on property owners. According to a recent notification, failure to comply with these regulations could result in the suspension or revocation of building usage permissions, as outlined in the Comprehensive General Development Control Regulations-2017.
Under the new rules, property owners are now mandated to ensure that all vehicles, whether belonging to residents or visitors, are properly parked within their building premises. To facilitate this, buildings must appoint a dedicated person to oversee parking and prevent unauthorized parking on adjacent streets.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Clear Signage Required
To make parking more accessible and organized, the AMC requires buildings to install clear directional signage indicating available parking spaces. Additionally, these spaces must feature clearly marked parking bays to optimize usage and prevent confusion.
The corporation has explicitly banned parking on municipal roads, footpaths, or any public spaces outside building premises. This move aims to free up these areas for pedestrians and smooth traffic flow, addressing long-standing complaints from residents.
Addressing Encroachments and Maximizing Space
The notification also tackles the issue of encroachments, strictly prohibiting the placement of goods or obstructions in the front margin areas of buildings. Property owners must immediately remove any existing platforms, landscaping, or barriers that hinder parking on road-facing premises or open spaces, making way for vehicle parking.
In a significant step towards accountability, property owners will now need to submit an annual self-declaration certificate to the zonal office, confirming that their parking areas are free from encroachments. The AMC plans to introduce an online facility for submitting these certificates in the future, streamlining the process.
Encouraging Shared Parking and Community Cooperation
To maximize parking space utilization, the AMC is encouraging buildings to share their extra parking capacity with visitors. Building chairpersons or secretaries can register available parking by filling out a "Parking Availability and Sharing Consent Form" on the AMC's website. This initiative promotes community cooperation and helps alleviate parking shortages in crowded areas.
These measures reflect the AMC's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and reducing traffic congestion in Ahmedabad. By holding property owners accountable and fostering a culture of shared responsibility, the corporation aims to transform the city's parking landscape, making it safer and more efficient for all residents and visitors.
