Kalaburagi: Members of the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) staged a protest on Saturday, demanding immediate compensation for students injured in a roof collapse at the Government Girls' Pre-University College on SP Office Road. They also called for the construction of a new building to replace the dilapidated structure.
Memorandum Submitted to District Administration
Following the demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office, the organisation submitted a memorandum to the district administration. Addressing the protesters, AIDSO district president Tulajaram NK highlighted that thousands of girl students from labourer and farmer families across rural parts of the district depend on the college for higher education.
Serious Safety Concerns Raised
Tulajaram stated that the collapse of a portion of the ceiling in a First PU Commerce classroom on the third floor of the new building during class on Friday has raised serious concerns over student safety. The incident occurred while classes were in session, causing panic among students and staff.
Students identified as Srushti, Sneha, Sheetal, Puja, and Divya sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a nearby trauma care centre for treatment. Two of them were shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the severity of their injuries.
Demand for New Building
The incident has created fear among students and parents, Tulajaram said, urging the government to release funds for a new college building to ensure student safety. He emphasised that the current infrastructure is inadequate and poses a risk to students, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
Protesters alleged that many government educational institutions in the district are in a similar condition, reflecting the low priority given to infrastructure development in government schools and colleges. They warned that without immediate action, more such incidents could occur.
Participation in Protest
AIDSO district secretary Venkatesh Devadurg, district vice-president Preeti Doddamani, treasurer Spurthi Gurajalkar, and hundreds of students participated in the protest. The demonstrators raised slogans demanding accountability and swift action from the authorities.
