Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Imposes Stiff Penalties on Construction Sites for Environmental Non-Compliance

The North Zone estate department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken stringent action against four construction sites in the city for blatant disregard of environmental norms. On Thursday, the department levied substantial penalties ranging from Rs 25,000 to a hefty Rs 2 lakh on these sites located in the Gota, Bodakdev, and Chandlodia areas. The fines were imposed due to multiple violations, including failure to install mandatory green nets, illegal dumping of materials, and significant contributions to air pollution.

Detailed Breakdown of Penalties and Violations

The enforcement drive targeted specific construction projects, each cited for distinct infractions:

  • Arambh Greens in Chandlodia: This ongoing construction site was penalized Rs 50,000. The primary violations included the absence of a mandatory green net, which is crucial for controlling dust and particulate matter, and unauthorized encroachment onto public roads by placing construction materials.
  • Orium Zenith in Chandlodia Ward: Another site in the same area faced a Rs 50,000 fine for similarly failing to install the required green net, highlighting a recurring issue in the locality.
  • The Valenor in Bodakdev: This project incurred a Rs 25,000 penalty. The infractions involved not installing the green net and illegally dumping construction debris on the road, obstructing public pathways and exacerbating environmental hazards.
  • Elinor 51 in Gota: The most severe penalty of Rs 2 lakh was imposed on this site for directly causing air pollution, underscoring the AMC's zero-tolerance approach towards activities that degrade air quality.

Additional Enforcement Actions Beyond Fines

In a parallel crackdown, the estate department of the Northwest Zone executed decisive measures against illegal constructions on reserved plots. The department took possession of a reserved plot in TP Scheme No. 45 located in the Chandlodia ward of Gota, where unauthorized structures were promptly removed. Furthermore, in Jagatpur's TP Scheme No. 34, illegal constructions on another reserved plot were demolished, and the plot was reclaimed by the authorities. These actions demonstrate a comprehensive strategy to not only penalize violators but also restore order and compliance in urban development.

The AMC's proactive stance aims to curb the rising concerns over air pollution and unauthorized construction activities in Ahmedabad. By imposing such penalties and reclaiming illegally occupied land, the municipal body sends a clear message about the importance of adhering to environmental regulations and urban planning norms. This enforcement drive is part of broader efforts to ensure sustainable development and protect public health in the city.
