APSRTC Announces Free Bus Travel for Persons with Disabilities in Vijayawada

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has unveiled a significant initiative to provide free bus travel for persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Vijayawada. This scheme, part of the "Indradhanussu" program, is set to be formally launched on March 18, aiming to enhance accessibility and mobility for the disabled community.

Eligibility and Coverage Details

According to the APSRTC, the free travel facility will be extended to all eligible PwDs who have a disability of 40% or more, as covered under Section 2 (ZC) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. Additionally, individuals escorting PwDs on buses will benefit from a 50% concession on ticket fares, making travel more affordable for caregivers and companions.

Bus Categories Included in the Scheme

The initiative will be available across five categories of APSRTC buses, ensuring wide coverage and convenience. These include:

  • Palle Velugu
  • Ultra Palle Velugu
  • City Ordinary
  • Metro Express
  • Express

This comprehensive approach aims to provide dignified public transport services, facilitating social participation and improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

Objectives and Impact

The APSRTC stated that this initiative is designed to enhance accessibility, mobility, and social inclusion for PwDs by offering convenient and respectful public transport options. By removing financial barriers, the corporation seeks to empower disabled individuals, enabling them to travel more freely for work, education, healthcare, and leisure activities.

This move aligns with broader efforts under the RPwD Act to promote equality and support for persons with disabilities across India. The launch of the Indradhanussu scheme marks a progressive step in public transportation policy, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and welfare in Andhra Pradesh.
